Who it suits / who it doesn't
Botox temporarily relaxes muscles to smooth wrinkles or reduce muscle bulk. The treatment is short and needs almost no recovery time, so it is easy to have even on a short trip.
- You are bothered by forehead, frown-line or crow's-feet wrinkles that appear when you smile or frown
- Your jaw muscles are strong and make the lower face look square
- Your trapezius muscles stand out above the shoulders and make your neck look short
- You want to refine skin texture too — pores, oil and fine lines
- You sweat heavily under the arms or in the palms and it affects daily life
What is Botox (botulinum toxin)?
"Botox" is originally one company's product name, but in Korea it is widely used as a word for all botulinum toxin injections. The formal name is botulinum toxin (botulinum toxin type A).
The toxin temporarily blocks the signal that nerves send to a muscle telling it to move. Expression lines soften, and muscles you use heavily rest and gradually shrink in volume. The effect fades naturally over time and you return to your original state.
Uses and duration by area
Even with the same Botox, the purpose and how quickly results appear differ by area.
| Area | Purpose | When results appear | Typical duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forehead, frown lines, crow's feet | Soften expression lines | From day 2–3, clearest at about 2 weeks | Around 3–4 months |
| Jawline (masseter muscle) | Reduce muscle bulk for a slimmer lower face | Gradually from 2–4 weeks, clear at 6–8 weeks | Around 4–6 months |
| Trapezius | Refine the shoulder line and make the neck look longer | Gradually from about 4 weeks | Around 4–6 months |
| Skin Botox | Pores, oil, fine lines and skin texture | 1–2 weeks | Around 2–3 months |
| Excessive sweating (underarms, etc.) | Reduce sweat production | A few days–2 weeks | 4–6 months or more |
| Chin, mouth corners, gums | Chin wrinkles, downturned mouth corners, gummy smile | 1–2 weeks | Around 3–4 months |
For treatments that reduce muscle bulk (jawline, trapezius), repeating 2–3 times often makes results last longer. However, if your jaw bone itself is wide, Botox can only change so much.
Types of toxin — domestic and imported
In Korea, toxins from several companies are approved by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and in use. They fall broadly into domestic and imported products.
- Domestic toxins: several products made by Korean pharmaceutical companies, some of which are also approved and used overseas. They are the most commonly used in Korean clinics.
- Imported toxins: products from overseas companies such as those in the US and Germany. Many people who want to keep using the product they have at home choose these.
- There are also "purified" toxins with the complexing proteins removed. This is the type people most often ask about in consultations when they are worried about resistance.
As long as a product is approved, you cannot say one is simply better than another. Each product measures units differently, so the numbers can't be compared directly either. What matters is to confirm in advance which product, in which area, and how many units.
Can you build resistance?
With repeated Botox, the body can rarely produce antibodies against the toxin, making the effect weaker. This is uncommon at the usual cosmetic doses, but the habits below are known to raise the risk.
- Having another treatment at short intervals (under 3 months) while the effect is still there
- Having a large amount in many areas at once
- Repeating extra injections within 2 weeks because the effect seems to have worn off
It is best to have the next treatment after the effect has clearly worn off, and to keep a record of the products and dates so far. If you are worried about resistance, you can ask about purified toxins.
How to verify the product and dose
The visible result of Botox appears only after 2 weeks, so checking on the day of treatment is important. At KBEAU partner clinics you can ask for the checks below.
- Before treatment, confirm the product name and the dose (units) for each area, verbally or in writing.
- Ask that a new vial be opened in front of you, and ask to see the product box and vial label (product name, dose, expiry date).
- If you want to see the dilution and the filling of the syringe, please tell us beforehand.
- After treatment you can ask to see the empty vial or label. Taking a photo helps with follow-up care after you return home.
- Check that the product name is written on your payment receipt and itemized statement.
Treatment-day flow
- 1Consultation (about 15–20 minutes)you make facial expressions so the muscle movement can be assessed, and the areas, product and dose are decided. Your manager interprets.
- 2Product check & photosyou confirm the product is opened in front of you, and before-photos are taken for comparison.
- 3Cleansing & numbing (5–20 minutes)if needed, numbing cream or a cold pack reduces the sting. This is often skipped for the jawline and trapezius.
- 4Injection (5–15 minutes)a fine needle is used at several points. The sting is brief.
- 5Heading homeneedle marks and small bumps usually settle within 30 minutes to 1 hour. You can eat and go sightseeing right away.
What changes, day by day after treatment
- Same dayNeedle marks and small mosquito-bite-like bumps. Don't lie down for 4 hours and don't rub the treated area.
- Days 1–3For wrinkle areas, movement starts to feel reduced from day 2–3. If you bruise, it shows most clearly now.
- 1 weekMost of the wrinkle effect has appeared. After jawline Botox you may feel slightly less strength when chewing.
- 2 weeksThe point when wrinkle Botox is clearest. A good time to check for left-right differences or any gaps.
- Weeks 4–8For jawline and trapezius, the line starts to change as muscle volume shrinks.
- Months 3–6The effect gradually fades depending on the area. This is your guide for timing the next treatment.
Planning your trip
Botox is a classic treatment that can be done even on a short stay. Just plan around the fact that results are checked 2 weeks later.
- Same day to 1 night: enough if you are only having Botox. We recommend treatment the morning after you arrive.
- If possible, leave about a day before your flight for peace of mind. Flying itself is not restricted in most cases.
- If you also have fillers or lasers, extend your stay to allow for swelling and bruising.
- At week 2 after you return home, send photos of your face at rest, frowning and smiling; the clinic will check and tell you whether a touch-up is needed.
Aftercare
- Do not lie down or lie face down for 4 hours after treatment.
- On the day, do not press or rub the treated area. Avoid massage, meridian therapy and gua sha for about 2 weeks.
- Avoid saunas, jjimjilbang and hot baths for about 1 week. If a jjimjilbang is on your Korea itinerary, move it to before your treatment.
- Avoid alcohol for at least 1–2 days and strenuous exercise on the day. This helps reduce bruising and swelling.
- After jawline Botox, cut back on tough foods and chewing gum for a few days.
- Washing your face and light makeup are usually fine from the evening of the same day.
Side effects and when to contact us
Most reactions are mild and disappear within a few days.
- Common: redness and small bumps at injection marks (a few hours), bruising (1–2 weeks), mild headache
- Occasional: left-right asymmetry, raised outer eyebrows, loss of chewing strength after jawline treatment
- Rare: drooping eyelid or eyebrow, an awkward look when smiling. Most are temporary and recover within weeks to months.
Questions to ask in your consultation · How to choose a clinic
Good questions to ask in your consultation
- Which product will you use, and how many units for each area?
- Can I check the vial opening and the label?
- Will the doctor perform the injections personally?
- When will the effect appear and about how long will it last?
- Will you check my photos after 2 weeks, and what are your touch-up criteria?
- Is there anything I should watch out for given my schedule (sauna, flights, other treatments)?
When choosing a clinic, check whether the doctor personally consults and treats you, whether the product and dose are explained openly, and whether there is foreign-language support and a way to reach the clinic after treatment. KBEAU takes care of consultations and interpretation at partner clinics in Gangnam and Apgujeong, and photo check-ups after treatment.
