At a Glance — Nose Filler vs Rhinoplasty
Nose filler 'fills' the bridge and tip by injection to lift them slightly, while rhinoplasty changes the 'structure' of the nose through surgery. Both can raise the nose, but the range of what each can do, the recovery time, and the number of days you need to stay in Korea are very different.
| Nose Filler (Non-Surgical Nose Job) | Rhinoplasty (Surgery) | |
|---|---|---|
| Method | Hyaluronic acid gel injected into the bridge and tip | Incision, then the shape is built with an implant or your own cartilage |
| What it can change | Slightly raising a low bridge, smoothing the side profile | Structural changes: height, tip, hump, crooked nose, and nostrils (alar base) |
| Procedure time | 10–30 minutes (about 1 hour including numbing cream) | Surgery 1–3 hours (half a day including tests) |
| Downtime | Redness and swelling 2–3 days; bruising, if it appears, around 1 week | Major swelling and bruising 1–2 weeks; splint and stitches about 5–7 days |
| Length of stay | 1–3 days (4–5 days recommended to check progress) | At least 7–10 days |
| How long it lasts | Usually 6 months to 1+ year (the nose tends to hold filler relatively long; varies a lot from person to person) | Permanent (may change with aging or injury) |
| Reversibility | Can be dissolved with hyaluronidase | Can only be corrected by revision surgery |
| Main risks | Rare vascular complications (skin necrosis, vision problems) | Infection, implant showing through or contracture, asymmetry, possible revision |
How They Work — Filling vs Changing Structure
Nose filler adds hyaluronic acid filler a little at a time into the space over the nasal bone and over the tip cartilage to create height. There is a limit to how much the skin can stretch, so a realistic goal is a nose that is 'slightly higher and smoother than your original.' The skin at the tip is firm and hard to fill much, and the more you add, the blunter it can look.
In rhinoplasty, an implant such as silicone or Gore-Tex is placed on the bridge, or your own cartilage (septum, ear, or rib) is attached to the tip to build the shape. Work that 'removes and repositions,' such as shaving down a protruding bone or straightening a crooked nose, can only be done with surgery.
When Filler Fits / When Surgery Fits
When nose filler is a good fit
- Your bridge is low overall and you want to lift your profile just a little
- You want to fill above and below a small hump so the side line looks smoother
- You want to see first whether a 'higher nose' suits your face before committing to surgery
- Your stay in Korea is short (2–4 days) and you need to get back to normal life quickly
When rhinoplasty is a better fit
- You want a definite change in height or a change in tip shape (bulbous, drooping, or upturned)
- You have a large hump or a crooked nose, or trouble breathing as well
- You need a change that makes things 'smaller,' such as reducing the nostrils
- You have had repeated filler but are still not getting the shape you want
Vascular Complications of Nose Filler — Rare, but Worth Knowing
The nose has many blood vessels just under the skin, and these are connected to the vessels that supply the eye. If filler blocks or compresses a vessel, part of the skin can rarely die (necrosis), and very rarely vision problems can occur. This is very uncommon compared with the number of procedures done, but the nose is considered a higher-risk area of the face.
Symptoms to contact the clinic about right away
- Severe pain you can't tolerate during or right after the procedure
- Skin on the nose tip, nostrils, or between the brows turning white, or a net-like purple or bluish mottling appearing
- Small blisters or pus-like spots appearing over a few days
- Blurred vision, a feeling that part of your vision is blocked, eye pain, or headache (contact emergency care immediately)
To lower the risk, check that an experienced doctor performs the injection personally, that they explain safety practices such as using a cannula and injecting in small amounts, and that the clinic keeps hyaluronidase on hand and has an emergency response procedure.
Does Repeated Filler Affect Later Surgery?
With repeated filler, the nose can start to look spread out sideways, or the bridge can become wide and blunt. Over time, some filler may remain, and a capsule (membrane) or scar tissue can form around it.
When you later have rhinoplasty, leftover filler and the surrounding tissue can get in the way of creating the surgical space, so the filler is dissolved with hyaluronidase before surgery or removed during surgery. So if you are thinking about surgery, it's better to get a surgical consultation early than to keep stacking up filler.
What About Nose Thread Lifts? — A Choice Between Filler and Surgery
A nose thread lift places dissolvable threads (such as PDO) in the bridge and tip to prop the nose up like a support. If filler adds 'volume,' threads add 'lifting force,' and they are used to raise the tip slightly or make the bridge line look straighter. They are sometimes combined with filler.
- Recovery: about 2–3 days of swelling, needle marks
- Longevity: around 6 months to 1 year as the threads dissolve (varies a lot from person to person)
- Limits: it is hard to raise the tip a lot or change its shape. Rarely, threads can show through or poke out
How to Verify Genuine Products — Check It Yourself
Nose filler is placed in an area with many blood vessels, so knowing which product and how much is especially important. A reputable clinic will not mind the requests below.
- Ask to have the product name and amount (cc) explained before the procedure
- Check that the sealed product is opened in front of you
- Look at the product name, lot number, and expiry date on the syringe and box
- Get the genuine-product sticker or take a photo of it
- Ask to see the empty syringe and label after the procedure
A Short-Stay Plan — How Many Days Do You Need?
Nose filler: a 2–3 night schedule
- Day 1, afternoonArrive, consultation, nose filler. Rest at your accommodation in the evening and avoid alcohol and saunas.
- Day 2Light sightseeing is fine. Share morning and evening photos of the skin color on your nose tip with your manager
- Day 3Check the shape and skin color at the clinic, then fly home
Rhinoplasty is different
- Stay at least 7–10 days: consultation and tests, surgery, splint and stitch removal on day 5–7, and a checkup before you fly home
- For revision surgery or rib cartilage surgery, about 2 weeks is recommended
- If you dissolve filler and then have surgery, your schedule may need a gap between dissolving and surgery
Tips While Traveling
- For 1 week after filler, avoid saunas, jjimjilbang, and hot baths.
- On the plane, don't press your nose with glasses or a sleep mask. Wear glasses only lightly for a few days.
- For 2–3 days, avoid alcohol and intense exercise, and don't touch or massage your nose hard.
- On sunny days, wear a hat and sunscreen. If anything seems off after you get home, send us a photo.
Questions to Ask at Your Consultation
- Can filler give me the shape I want with my nose, or is surgery the better choice? Why?
- Is it hyaluronic acid filler? Which product and how many cc will you use?
- Will the doctor perform the injection personally? Needle or cannula?
- If a vascular complication happens, can the clinic respond right away? Do you keep hyaluronidase on hand?
- If it is uneven or not enough, when can it be touched up?
- If I want rhinoplasty later, how does the filler I have now affect surgery?
- If a problem comes up after I go home, how do I contact you and get a consultation by photo?
How to Choose a Clinic
- Does the clinic look at your nose structure and explain both options, rather than deciding on filler or surgery in advance?
- For nose filler, does the doctor inject personally and explain how vascular complications are handled (hyaluronidase on hand, emergency procedure)?
- Do they open the product in front of you and show the product name, amount, and label?
- For rhinoplasty, is the consultation and surgery done by a board-certified plastic surgeon, and does the doctor you consulted perform the operation?
- Do they avoid recommending excessive amounts or unnecessary repeat treatments?
- Is service available in your language, and will they check your progress by photo after you return home?
