Who it suits — and who should wait
Pico toning is a laser that shatters pigment in the skin into tiny particles so your body can clear them naturally. Because there is almost no recovery time, it is one of the most popular treatments to get during a trip to Korea.
- You have light-brown melasma spread across both cheeks
- Freckles and dark spots make your skin tone uneven
- You are bothered by dullness that makeup does not cover
- You want to go straight back to sightseeing with no recovery time
What is pico toning? — How it differs from regular laser toning
“Pico” means one trillionth of a second. A pico laser fires light in extremely short pulses, so it breaks pigment with a shock wave rather than heat. That lets it shatter pigment into smaller pieces while putting less heat on the surrounding skin.
Regular laser toning (nanosecond laser) has also been used for melasma and spots for many years. Which one suits you depends on the type and depth of the pigment and your skin type — and many clinics actually combine the two.
- PicoSure, PicoWay, Discovery Pico and PicoPlus are all brand names of pico laser devices.
- More important than the device name is an accurate diagnosis of what your pigment is, and treatment at the right strength for it.
What is my pigment? — Melasma vs. freckles vs. dark spots
What looks like “melasma” is often a mix of several kinds of pigment. Each type needs a different treatment and number of sessions, so the diagnosis decides the result.
| Type | What it looks like | Where it appears | Usual approach | Sessions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Melasma | Light brown patches with blurry edges, often symmetrical | Cheeks, cheekbones, forehead, upper lip | Repeated low-power toning + sun protection and topical medicine | 5–10+, with maintenance |
| Freckles | Small round dots scattered, darker in summer | Nose, cheeks | Pico spot or toning | 1–3 |
| Dark spots (lentigines) | Brown spots with clear edges, increase with age | Cheeks, back of hands | Pico spot (treated one by one) | 1–2 |
| Moles | Raised or dark brown/black | Anywhere | Mole removal laser | 1 (more if large) |
| Nevus of Ota / acquired pigment | Bluish or grey-brown, deep in the skin | Cheekbones, around the eyes | Several pico laser sessions | Several, with long intervals |
Compared with similar treatments
| Treatment | How it works | Best for | Downtime |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pico toning | Pico laser applied gently over the whole face | Melasma, overall tone | Almost none |
| Laser toning | Nanosecond laser applied gently over the whole face | Melasma, overall tone | Almost none |
| Pico spot | Pico laser applied strongly to each spot | Dark spots, freckles | Scabs 5–10 days |
| Pico fractional | Stimulates the skin in tiny dots | Pores, fine scars, texture | Redness 1–3 days |
| IPL / BBL | Broad-spectrum light | Redness together with spots | Light scabs 1–3 days |
On short trips, the most popular combination is “pico toning + spot removal for only the most visible spots.” Spot removal comes with scabs, so it is best to set the range to fit your schedule.
What happens on treatment day
- 1Check-in & consultation (about 20 min)A skin analyser checks the type and depth of your pigment and the treatment area is decided. Your manager interprets.
- 2Cleansing & numbing cream (about 30 min)Numbing cream reduces the stinging. It is sometimes skipped for toning only.
- 3Laser treatment (15–30 min)Whole-face toning, plus spot treatment on dark spots if needed. If you want to check that the device is genuine, it can be shown to you now.
- 4Soothing care (about 15 min)A calming mask or cooling settles the redness.
- 5Leave the clinicYou can go straight back to sightseeing. Healing tape is applied to treated spots.
How many sessions, and how far apart?
- Melasma: usually 5–10+ sessions every 2–4 weeks. Skin looks brighter from the 1st or 2nd session, while the melasma itself fades gradually as sessions add up.
- Dark spots & freckles (spot): often done in 1–2 sessions. If some colour remains after the scab falls off, another session can be done after 4 weeks.
- Moles: usually 1 session. Large or deep moles may need one more.
Visitors from abroad cannot come to Korea for every session, so the usual plan looks like this.
- First visit: diagnosis + 1 toning session (+ spot treatment if needed)
- Back home: keep the results with sun protection and the home care the clinic recommends
- Next visit (on your next trip 1–3 months later): more toning + clearing remaining spots
Downtime — what to expect day by day
Toning only
- Same dayRedness and warmth for 1–2 hours. Mostly settled by the evening.
- Day 1Makeup is fine. Skin may feel a little dry, so moisturise well.
- Days 3–7Tone looks a little clearer. Some pigment may look darker for a while before fading.
With dark spot removal
- Same dayTreated spots turn darker and healing tape is applied.
- Days 2–3Thin scabs form. You can wear makeup over the tape, but do not rub.
- Days 5–10Scabs fall off on their own. Picking them can leave marks.
- Weeks 2–4The area looks pinkish, then returns to your natural skin colour. Sun protection matters most during this time.

How to choose a clinic
- A board-certified dermatologist diagnoses you and sets the laser strength
- They tell you the device name and show you the genuine device if you ask
- They explain the difference between melasma and dark spots (rather than offering the same package without a diagnosis)
- They do not push very high strength or a large number of sessions from the first visit
- They speak your language and check your progress by photo after you go home
KBEAU connects you with partner clinics run by board-certified dermatologists in Gangnam and Apgujeong. Send us a photo of your face before the consultation and we will tell you your pigment type, how many sessions you may need and a treatment range that fits your schedule. On treatment day, your dedicated manager comes with you and interprets.
