Who it suits / who it doesn't
Potenza is an "RF microneedling" treatment that delivers radiofrequency heat deep into the skin through fine needles. It is gentler on the skin surface while stimulating collagen renewal in the dermis, so it is widely used for "uneven surface" concerns such as pores, acne scars and rough skin texture.
Good candidates
- Enlarged pores on the cheeks or beside the nose that catch makeup and make skin look rough
- Shallow boxcar or rolling acne scars
- Thinning, less firm skin whose texture is starting to look slack
- Oily skin with recurring acne (some tips are used for acne management)
- Darker skin tones worried about pigmentation after lasers — because epidermal damage is relatively low, this method is worth discussing at your consultation
Needs checking first
- Anyone with a pacemaker or other electronic medical device, or metal implants in the face
- Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding
- Anyone with active cold sores (herpes on the lips), infection or severe inflammatory acne in the treatment area
- Anyone prone to keloids, or currently taking or recently stopped oral acne medication (isotretinoin)
What is Potenza? — How it works, simply explained
Standard microneedling (such as Dermapen) creates tiny wounds with needles to trigger renewal. Potenza adds radiofrequency (RF) energy, releasing heat when the needle tip reaches the target depth. That heat tightens and renews collagen, and can also act on oil glands and tiny blood vessels.
- Needle depth can be adjusted by area, so thin skin around the eyes and thicker skin on the cheeks are treated at different depths.
- Because the heat is generated beneath the surface rather than on it, downtime tends to be shorter than with lasers that remove a wide area of the surface.
- RF modes (monopolar and bipolar) and tips can be swapped and combined to suit your goal.
Tip types — chosen to match your concern
Potenza is a device with interchangeable "tips" that touch the skin. Clinics use different names, but the concepts fall into the groups below.
| Tip type | Method | Main concerns |
|---|---|---|
| Multi-needle tip | Many needles deliver RF over a wide area | Pores, acne scars, overall skin texture |
| Oil-gland targeting tip | Insulated needles deliver heat only at depth | Recurring acne, oil production |
| Drug delivery (pumping) tip | Pushes an ampoule or skin booster into the skin during treatment | Renewal and soothing; support for scars and pores |
| Non-invasive (needle-free) tip | Delivers RF on the skin surface without needles | Firmness, calming redness, sensitive skin |
What is drug delivery?
A method that helps renewal ampoules or skin booster ingredients enter the skin more easily through the tiny channels the needles create. The doctor chooses the ingredient based on your skin and goals; adding one may keep redness and swelling around a little longer.
Comparison with similar treatments
| Treatment | Method | Best for | Downtime feel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Potenza (RF microneedling) | Needles deliver RF heat into the skin | Pores, shallow scars, skin texture, firmness | Redness and pinpoint marks 1–3 days |
| Fraxel (fractional laser) | Laser creates tiny columns of injury to trigger renewal | Boxcar scars, overall skin texture | Redness and fine scabbing 3–7 days |
| Laser toning | Low-power laser breaks up pigment gradually | Melasma, dull tone, pigment marks | Almost none |
| Skin booster | Injects renewal and hydrating ingredients into the skin | Fine lines, dryness, supporting skin renewal | Injection marks and small bruises 1–3 days |
If pores and scars are the main concern, Potenza or Fraxel is usually the core treatment; if pigment is the main concern, toning takes the lead. In practice, combinations such as Potenza with a skin booster or toning are common. Deep scars may need other methods such as subcision.
How many sessions, and how far apart?
- Pores/texture: usually planned as a course of 3–5 sessions, 4 weeks apart.
- Acne scars: 3–5+ sessions, 4–6 weeks apart; deeper scars are combined with other treatments.
- Recurring acne: oil-gland targeting tips are sometimes planned for several sessions, 2–4 weeks apart.
- Changes start to be felt from 2–4 weeks after treatment and become clear over 1–3 months as sessions add up.
What happens on treatment day
- 1Consultation and diagnosis (about 20–30 min): the doctor checks pores, scars and oil, then decides the tip, depth and intensity. Your manager interprets.
- 2Cleansing and photostaking before photos under the same conditions makes it easier to compare at later sessions.
- 3Numbing cream (about 30–40 min)applied over the whole face to reduce the sting of the needles.
- 4Treatment (about 20–30 min)depth is changed by area. If drug delivery is included, the ampoule is introduced at this stage.
- 5Soothing care and heading backfinished with cooling and a calming cream, plus aftercare instructions.
How painful is it?
Even with numbing cream, you will feel some stinging and warmth as the needles go in. Areas close to bone, such as the forehead, beside the nose and the jawline, are more sensitive. Most people find it tolerable, and if it hurts, tell the doctor right away so the intensity or depth can be adjusted.
Downtime — how the days go
Based on standard intensity over the whole face
- Day of treatmentSkin looks red and feels hot like a sunburn, and tiny pinpoint marks may show where the needles went in. Slight swelling is possible.
- Days 1–3Redness and pinpoint marks fade quickly. From the next day, most people can cover them with light makeup.
- Days 3–7Skin may feel dry and show fine flaking. Do not peel it off.
- Weeks 2–4Skin texture starts to feel gradually smoother.
- Months 1–3As collagen builds up, changes in pores and scars slowly become clearer.
Sample trip schedule
- Day 1: Arrive and check in to your accommodation.
- Day 2: Consultation, then treatment the same day. Rest at your accommodation in the evening.
- Day 3: Once redness fades, apply light makeup and sightsee, mostly indoors.
- Days 4–5: Normal sightseeing is fine. Having your skin checked once more before you fly home gives peace of mind.
- Schedule anything photo-related at least 3–4 days after treatment.
- For 2–3 days after treatment, avoid saunas, jjimjilbang, swimming pools, alcohol and strenuous exercise.
- Bring a hat and sunscreen for outdoor plans.
- Flying is usually fine from the next day. The cabin air is dry, so bring a moisturizer.
- If you need several sessions, plan your next visit at least 4 weeks later, or get a long-term plan at your first visit.
Preparation before and care after
Before treatment
- From 1 week before, pause retinol and peeling products and avoid strong sun.
- Tell us about any medication you take (especially drugs that affect blood clotting, and acne medication) at your consultation.
- If you often get cold sores, let us know in advance so preventive medication can be considered.
After treatment
- On the day, wash with water only; from the next day, use a gentle cleanser.
- Apply the renewal cream and moisturizer from the clinic generously.
- Use sunscreen every day for at least 1 month, reapplying every 2–3 hours.
- For about 1 week, avoid retinol, exfoliating products and scrubs.
- Do not scratch or pick at pinpoint marks or flaking skin.
When to contact your manager right away
- When redness, swelling or pain gets worse day by day
- When yellow discharge or pus appears, or warmth spreads
- When blisters form, or grid-shaped marks stay for a long time
Checking for genuine tips — just check these
Potenza needle tips are, in principle, single-use consumables used once for one person. This directly affects both hygiene and treatment quality.
- Check that a new tip is opened in front of you before treatment.
- Check that the tip type on the packaging matches what was explained at your consultation.
- If drug delivery is included, check the product name and amount of the ampoule or skin booster used, and you can ask to see the empty container or label afterward.
- If you wonder whether the device itself is officially imported equipment, feel free to ask at your consultation.
Good questions to ask at your consultation
- For my concern (pores, scars, acne), which tip and depth will you use, and why?
- Does adding drug delivery make sense for me? What ingredient is it?
- How many sessions and what spacing do you think I need? Is that possible within my visit?
- What condition will my skin be in on the day I fly home?
- Can I combine it with other treatments (toning, skin booster, etc.)?
- Do you open a new tip for each patient?
- What should I apply and what should I avoid after I get home?
How to choose a clinic
- Whether a board-certified dermatologist personally diagnoses your skin and decides the tip, depth and intensity
- Whether depth and intensity are adjusted by area, even with the same device
- Whether a new single-use tip is opened and you are shown it
- Whether they avoid pushing excessive intensity or short-interval repeats from the first session
- Whether before-and-after photos are taken under the same conditions and compared
- Whether they offer foreign-language support and review your progress by photo after you return home
