In one line
| Shurink | Ulthera | |
|---|---|---|
| In a nutshell | Ultrasound lifting you can have lightly and often | Ultrasound lifting you watch on screen and have deeply, in one big session |
| Energy | High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) | High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) |
| Imaging | None — done with cartridges set to fixed depths | Done while viewing the skin layers on a real-time ultrasound image |
| Unit | Counted in shots (points); some modes also offer a line type | Counted in lines, though commonly called ‘shots’ |
| Sensation | Relatively mild warmth | A sharper zing near the bone |
| How it's done | Repeated maintenance at short intervals | Usually once every 6 months–1 year |
Same principle — high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU)
Both treatments focus ultrasound energy at a specific depth under the skin, like a magnifying glass, creating tiny points of heat coagulation. The skin surface is left intact while the tissue underneath tightens, and new collagen forms as it heals. That's why you may feel a slight tightening right away, while the real change appears gradually over 1–3 months.
The depth the energy reaches is set by the cartridge (tip). Treatment is usually layered by area across the shallow skin layer (about 1.5mm), the layer below the dermis (about 3.0mm), and the fascia layer linked to sagging (SMAS, about 4.5mm).
What's different — imaging, devices and shot counts
Real-time imaging or not
- With Ulthera, energy is delivered while you watch the skin, fat and fascia layers on an ultrasound screen. Because thickness differs from one part of the face to another, being able to see the depth directly is its hallmark.
- Shurink has no imaging screen; the doctor picks a cartridge with a fixed depth. In return, it is quick and gentle, which is why it's widely used for repeated maintenance. Choosing the right depth for each area depends on the doctor's examination and experience.
Devices and tips
- Shurink is a HIFU device made by a Korean company, and newer models such as ‘Shurink Universe’ are widely used these days. Some models let you choose between a point-type mode and a line-type mode.
- Ulthera is a HIFU device developed overseas, using a dedicated transducer (tip) with built-in imaging.
- On both devices, the tip is a consumable that records its usage, so whether the tip is genuine and how much of it is actually used affect your result.
‘Shot counts’ are not the same unit
Shurink's ‘300 shots’ and Ulthera's ‘300 shots’ differ in the form and amount of energy, so you can't compare them by the number alone. Even on the same device, results vary with the area, depth and intensity, so what matters is not ‘how many shots in total’ but ‘how many shots, at what depth, in which area’.
Finding your fit — a checklist
More like Shurink
- Your sagging is just starting or fairly mild
- You're worried about pain and want a more comfortable session
- You visit Korea often, or want light maintenance every time you travel
- You want to tidy up your jawline and double chin while keeping your skin firm
More like Ulthera
- Sagging in your jawline or cheeks has become noticeable
- You can't visit Korea often and want one deeper session
- You prefer to see the depth for each area on an ultrasound image
- A bigger treatment about once a year suits your schedule better
When results show, how long they last, and repeat intervals
| Shurink | Ulthera | |
|---|---|---|
| Right after | A slightly tidied-up feeling | A slight tightening feeling |
| Real change | Over 1–2 months | Over 2–3 months |
| How long it lasts (general range) | Usually 3–6 months | Usually 6 months–1 year |
| Repeat interval | Several sessions a few weeks apart at first, then every few months | Usually 6 months–1 year |
How long results last varies a lot with age, skin thickness, degree of sagging, shot count and depth setup, and lifestyle (sun exposure, weight changes). We don't recommend repeating strong sessions at very short intervals; your doctor decides the timing of the next session based on your progress.
How to check genuine tips and shot counts (essential)
- 1Before treatmentcheck that your quote lists the device name (Shurink and which model / Ulthera) and the shot count for each area.
- 2Opening checkask for the genuine cartridge (tip) to be opened in front of you. Check the product name and the depth (mm) printed on the packaging and the tip.
- 3Counter checkbefore treatment, look at the shot counter on the device screen (remaining or used shots) together with the staff.
- 4After treatmentcheck the number of shots actually used on the device screen and see whether it matches the quote. Ask whether you can take a photo of it.
- 5For Ulthera, you can also check that the ultrasound image is actually visible on screen during treatment.
Step by step on treatment day
- 1Consultation and design (20–30 minutes)the doctor looks at your degree of sagging and skin thickness, then decides the device, depth, and shot count for each area.
- 2Numbing cream (20–40 minutes)if you're worried about pain, let them know beforehand.
- 3Genuine tip opening and counter check
- 4Treatmentabout 20–40 minutes for Shurink, 40–90 minutes for Ulthera. If it hurts, tell them right away and they'll adjust the intensity.
- 5Soothing care, then head outyou can go back to your day and sightseeing right away.
After treatment and downtime
- Same daySlight redness and warmth. Makeup is usually recommended from the next day.
- Days 1–3Mild swelling is possible. The area under the chin and around the cheekbones may feel sore or tight when pressed.
- Weeks 1–2Occasionally you may have tenderness when pressed, a tingling sensation, or small bruises, but most go away on their own.
- Months 1–3As collagen builds up, changes in your jawline and firmness appear gradually.
- After 3 monthsFor Shurink, you can discuss maintenance from around this point; for Ulthera, around 6 months–1 year.
Sample trip schedule and precautions
- Day 1, afternoonArrive → consultation → Shurink or Ulthera
- Day 1, eveningRest at your accommodation. Avoid saunas, jjimjilbang (Korean spas) and alcohol
- Day 2Sightseeing and shopping are fine. You can fly home the next day.
- For a few days after treatment, avoid saunas, hot baths, intense exercise and alcohol so that redness and swelling settle faster.
- Apply sunscreen carefully and wear a hat while sightseeing.
- Flying from the next day is fine for most people. Moisturize well on the plane.
- If anything seems off after you return home, send a photo to your manager and we'll check with the clinic together.
Side effects and precautions worth knowing
- Occasionally you may have temporary bruising, swelling, tenderness when pressed, or a tingling sensation. Most go away within a few days to a few weeks.
- Rarely, a small burn mark can appear on the skin surface, which is why a genuine tip and an appropriate intensity matter.
- If your cheeks are slim, strong treatment on a deep layer can make them look hollow.
- If you are pregnant, or have metal implants in the treatment area, a pacemaker, or recent filler or thread treatment, be sure to tell the clinic beforehand.
If pain or swelling keeps getting worse, or blisters appear on the skin, contact your manager right away.
Questions to ask at your consultation
- Which do you think suits my face better, Shurink or Ulthera? Why?
- How many shots, at what depth (mm), will you use in which area?
- What is the exact name and model of the device you use?
- Can you open the genuine tip in front of me and show me the shot counter before and after treatment?
- When should I have my next session?
- Are there treatments that go well on the same day, or ones I should avoid?
How to choose a clinic
- Whether they use genuine devices and genuine tips, and will open the tip and show the shot counter on request
- Whether they write the depth and shot count for each area on the quote
- Whether a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon examines you and decides the design and intensity
- Whether they take individual differences into account, such as a lean face, and avoid recommending excessive shot counts or frequent repeats
- Whether they offer foreign-language service and follow-up after you return home
