Who it suits / who it doesn't
Shurink uses ultrasound energy to firm and tighten the skin from within. It is closer to a light, regular upkeep treatment for people whose sagging has just started and who find a bigger procedure daunting.
Good fit if you
- Are in your 20s–40s with a slightly softer jawline and cheeks or mouth corners that have dropped a little
- Have a double chin or under-chin fullness that makes your side profile look heavy
- Are worried about pain and want a relatively comfortable treatment
- Visit Korea often, or want light upkeep each time you travel
- Want to go sightseeing and shopping right after treatment with no recovery period
When to consider other options first
- You have little cheek volume and your face is already slim — strong, deep-layer treatment can make you look hollow
- Your skin has sagged to the point of folding — deeper lifting such as Ulthera, thread lifting or a surgical consultation may suit you better
- If the wider look of your face comes from the jaw muscle (square jaw) — square jaw Botox may be the better fit
What is Shurink (Shurink Universe)? How it works
Shurink is a high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) lifting device made by a Korean medical device company. The model most clinics use today is its successor, Shurink Universe, and overseas it is sometimes sold under a different name.
The principle is like focusing sunlight to a single point with a magnifying glass. Ultrasound is focused at a set depth under the skin to create tiny thermal coagulation points. The surface is left intact while the tissue underneath tightens, and collagen is rebuilt during recovery. That is why you may feel slightly tighter right away, with the main change appearing over 1–2 months.
Two modes of Shurink Universe
- Dot mode: the basic mode, placing thermal coagulation points one by one at set intervals.
- MP (Ultra) mode: splits the energy into short pulses so that the heat is felt relatively less at the same depth. Depending on the device, there is also a line mode that works faster.
Cartridge depth — what is used where
Instead of watching a live image during treatment, Shurink works by swapping in cartridges (tips) that deliver energy at a fixed depth. Skin thickness differs across the face, so it is common to layer several depths.
| Cartridge depth (approx.) | Layer reached | Common purpose |
|---|---|---|
| About 1.5–2.0 mm | Shallow dermis, just under the epidermis | Fine lines, skin texture, thin areas such as around the eyes |
| About 3.0 mm | Deep dermis | Overall firmness, cheeks and forehead |
| About 4.5 mm | Near the fascia layer (SMAS) | Sagging jawline and cheeks, double chin area |
Understanding shot counts — the plan matters more than the number
Shurink is usually quoted in shots. One shot is a single energy pulse from the cartridge; more shots means wider or denser coverage. But more shots does not automatically mean a better result.
- Even with the same shot count, how it feels and looks depends on face size, area, depth mix and intensity.
- The number of shots needed differs depending on whether you treat the whole face or only the jawline and double chin.
- A Shurink shot and an Ulthera shot differ in energy type and unit, so the numbers cannot be compared directly.
- For slim faces, it is generally better to build the plan around shallow layers rather than pushing up the shot count.
Pain and numbing
Pain is mostly bearable: a brief sting and heat that passes quickly. In many cases numbing cream is applied for 20–30 minutes first.
- Areas close to bone, such as the jawline, cheekbones and forehead, tingle more.
- Deep cartridges (about 4.5 mm) can feel heavier than shallow ones.
- If it hurts, tell the doctor right away and the intensity or mode can be adjusted. Your interpreter manager relays this for you.
Why the short downtime suits a short trip
Shurink barely affects the skin surface, so redness and mild swelling usually settle within a few hours to a day. That makes it easy to fit into a short 2–3 day trip.
- Day 1, afternoonArrive → consultation → Shurink treatment (about 1–1.5 hours in total)
- Day 1, eveningRest at your hotel. Avoid saunas, jjimjilbang and alcohol
- Day 2Sightseeing and shopping are fine. If you like, add treatments such as Botox or skin boosters
- Day 3Fly home. Flying is rarely an issue.
- For the day of treatment and the 2 days after, avoiding saunas, hot baths, hard exercise and heavy drinking helps redness and swelling settle faster.
- Apply sunscreen carefully and use a hat or parasol while sightseeing.
- Most people can fly from the next day. Cabin air is dry, so moisturize well.
When results show, how long they last, and how often to repeat
- Right afterA slightly neater, tighter feel. Redness and warmth last a few hours
- Days 1–3Mild swelling; the area under the chin and cheekbones may feel sore when pressed.
- Weeks 1–2Occasionally tenderness, a tingling sensation or small bruises may remain, but most go away on their own.
- Months 1–2Collagen builds up and changes in the jawline and firmness appear gradually.
- Months 3–6Results gradually fade. This is when maintenance is discussed.
| Typical range | |
|---|---|
| Main change | Develops over 1–2 months |
| Duration | Usually 3–6 months (varies a lot between people) |
| Repeat interval | A few sessions a few weeks apart at first, then maintenance every few months |
How it differs from Ulthera (quick comparison)
| Shurink | Ulthera | |
|---|---|---|
| Energy | High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) | High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) |
| Imaging | None — uses cartridges with fixed depths | Proceeds while viewing the layers on real-time ultrasound imaging |
| Treatment time | 20–40 minutes | 40–90 minutes |
| Sensation | Relatively mild warmth | More tingling near bone |
| Main change | Develops over 1–2 months | Develops over 2–3 months |
| Duration (typical range) | Usually 3–6 months | Usually 6 months to 1 year |
| How it is done | Repeated upkeep at short intervals | Usually once every 6 months to 1 year |
Neither is simply better. The right one depends on whether you prefer light, frequent upkeep or one deeper session, and on how much sagging you have now. Some people use Ulthera for the big job and Shurink to maintain in between.
How to check it is genuine (a must)
There are many HIFU devices with similar names, and the cartridge is a consumable whose usage is recorded. Check in the following order.
- 1Before treatmentconfirm that the quote states the exact device name (the precise model, such as Shurink Universe) and the depth and shot count for each area.
- 2Check the genuine devicein the treatment room, ask to see the product name and manufacturer marking on the device itself.
- 3Check the cartridge opening and fittingwatch a genuine cartridge being opened and attached to the device in front of you. Also look at the product name and depth (mm) shown on the packaging.
- 4Check the shot counter screenbefore treatment, look together at the shot counter on the device screen (remaining or used shots).
- 5After treatmentcheck that the shots actually used on screen match the quote, and ask whether you may take a photo of it.
Side effects, precautions and aftercare back home
- Redness, warmth and mild swelling: usually settle within a few hours to a day.
- Tenderness, tingling and small bruises: occasional, and usually gone within days to weeks.
- Small burn marks or blisters on the skin surface: rare, but possible because the treatment uses heat, which is why a genuine cartridge and appropriate intensity matter.
- Hollow cheeks: strong deep-layer treatment in areas with little cheek volume can make you look gaunt.
After you return home, wash gently with lukewarm water and keep up moisturizer and sunscreen. If blisters appear, or pain or swelling keeps getting worse, send photos to your manager and we will check with the clinic together.
Questions to ask at your consultation
- Is Shurink right for my face, or would Ulthera or another lifting suit me better?
- Which areas get which cartridge depth (mm), and how many shots?
- What is the exact model of the device you use? Do you use dot mode or MP mode?
- Can you open and attach a genuine cartridge in front of me and show me the shot counter before and after?
- When should I have my next treatment?
- Can I have it on the same day as Botox, filler or skin boosters? In what order?
How to choose a clinic
- Uses a genuine device and genuine cartridges, and on request shows the opening, fitting and shot counter
- Writes the depth and shot count for each area in the quote
- A dermatology or plastic surgery specialist examines you and decides the depth and intensity
- Doesn't push excessive shot counts or frequent repeats for slim faces
- Offers foreign-language support and follow-up checks after you return home
