Two Kinds of Fine Lines — Expression Lines and Static Lines
Even among fine lines, different mechanisms call for different treatments. The first thing to sort out is whether the line appears only when you move, or remains even when your face is still. Most people have a mix of both.
The Difference Between the Two Types
| Type | Features | Main Cause | Core Treatment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expression lines (dynamic wrinkles) | Appear only when you smile or frown and almost disappear when the face is relaxed | Muscles repeatedly fold the skin | Botox to soften muscle movement |
| Static lines | The line stays when your face is relaxed, and a mark is still visible even if you stretch it with your hand | Collagen loss, dry and thinning skin, UV exposure, long-standing expression habits | Strengthen the skin itself with skin boosters and lasers, adding Botox if needed |
| Lines with sagging | Skin drops downward along with the wrinkle | Reduced elasticity of the skin and fascia | Consider a lifting-type treatment as well |
Quick Mirror Check
- Look straight ahead with a relaxed face — if you can see lines, static lines make up a large share
- Smile broadly or raise your eyebrows and then relax — if the lines smooth out quickly, they are expression lines
- Gently stretch the wrinkle with your finger — if fine lines remain in a net-like pattern, skin texture and dryness are involved
- Lightly pull your cheek upward — if the wrinkles also soften, sagging is involved
Fine Lines by Area — Causes and Suitable Treatments
| Area | Common Cause | Combinations Usually Considered |
|---|---|---|
| Crow's feet (around the eyes) | Contraction of the eye-circling muscle when smiling + thin skin | Botox as the core; add skin boosters or laser if static lines are present |
| Forehead | Habit of raising the eyebrows (frontalis muscle) | Botox (small doses, spread widely); deeper lines supplemented with skin boosters |
| Frown lines (between the brows) | Muscle contraction when frowning or concentrating | Botox as the core; for deeply etched lines, the doctor may add other methods |
| Neck lines | Horizontal folds (posture, smartphone use), thin skin, loss of elasticity | Skin boosters, laser, lifting-type treatments / Botox may be considered for vertical bands |
| Under-eye fine lines | Thin skin, dryness, collagen loss | Eye-area skin boosters, low-energy laser — Botox with caution |
Treatments at a Glance — Botox, Skin Boosters, Laser, Lifting
| Method | Role | When Results Appear | Duration (approx.) | Downtime |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Botox | Reduces the muscle movement that creates wrinkles | From 2–3 days, peak at 2 weeks | 3–4 months | Almost none; if bruising occurs, 1–2 weeks |
| Skin boosters (Rejuran, Juvelook, etc.) | Improve moisture and the regenerative environment inside the skin to strengthen texture and elasticity | Gradually over 2 weeks to 3 months | Several months to about 1 year | Bumps 1–3 days, bruising around 1 week |
| Lasers such as Fraxel | Stimulate collagen regeneration with micro-thermal energy and refine skin texture | Over 1–3 months | Tends to last a long time as sessions accumulate | Non-ablative 2–3 days, ablative 5–7 days |
| Lifting (ultrasound, radiofrequency) | Tighten skin and fascia to ease wrinkles that come with sagging | Slightly right after, over 2–3 months | About 6 months to 1 year | Almost none |
Fine lines are rarely solved with just one method; a common approach is to divide roles — Botox for movement, skin boosters and lasers for the skin itself. If sagging is also present, lifting is added.
A Closer Look at Each Method
Botox — The Foundation for Expression Lines
A small amount of botulinum toxin is injected to weaken muscle contraction. It is the most direct option for wrinkles caused by movement, such as crow's feet, forehead and frown lines, and the key is adjusting the dose so that natural expression remains rather than removing it entirely. When the effect fades, repeat at intervals of at least 3 months.
Skin Boosters — Static Fine Lines in Thin, Dry Skin
Products such as Rejuran (PN component), Juvelook (collagen-stimulating type) and hyaluronic-acid types differ in ingredients and action. They are injected widely as tiny bumps in the skin to gradually improve texture and elasticity, usually in several sessions 2–4 weeks apart. They are often used where skin is thin, such as around the eyes, under the eyes and on the neck.
Fraxel and Other Lasers — Skin Texture and Collagen Renewal
Tiny columns of heat are created in the skin to trigger renewal. Non-ablative types have short recovery and fit easily into a trip schedule, while ablative (CO2) types give bigger changes but leave scabs and pinkness for longer. Building up sessions at 4–6 week intervals is typical.
Lifting — When Sagging Is Also Present
Ultrasound lifting warms the deep fascia layer and radiofrequency lifting warms the skin layer broadly to improve firmness. Rather than filling fine lines themselves, it aims to reduce wrinkles that form as the skin drops, and with almost no downtime it is easy to schedule on the same trip as other treatments.
Realistic Combinations by Age
| Age | Common Condition | Combinations Often Considered |
|---|---|---|
| Late 20s to early 30s | Expression lines around the eyes and between the brows that appear only when smiling | Mainly Botox; add skin boosters if the skin is dry |
| 30s | Expression lines + early static fine lines | Botox + 2–3 skin booster sessions |
| 40s | Distinct static lines, reduced skin texture | Botox + skin boosters + non-ablative laser |
| 50s and older | Static lines + sagging | Lifting + skin boosters and laser, with small area-by-area Botox doses |
Combinations by Trip Length
1 night 2 days to 2 nights 3 days — Botox + Skin Booster
- Day 1Arrive → consultation → Botox and skin booster (often possible on the same day; the doctor decides the order)
- Day 2Sightseeing is fine. Bump marks usually settle within 1–2 days. Avoid saunas and alcohol
- Day 3Fly home. Botox peaks around 2 weeks, so check progress with photos at that point
3 nights 4 days — Including Non-Ablative Laser
- Day 1Arrive → in-person consultation, decide areas and combination
- Day 2Non-ablative laser (+ Botox) → some redness, so plan mostly indoor activities
- Day 3Add a skin booster or lifting; light outings are fine
- Day 4Fly home. Keep up sun protection and moisturizing
6 nights 7 days or more — Up to Ablative Laser
- Day 1After consultation, ablative (CO2) laser, with Botox if needed
- Days 2–5Fine-scab period — stay mostly near your accommodation, and wear makeup only after the doctor's guidance
- Days 6–7Scabs fall off; fly home after a progress check. Pinkness may remain for 2–4 weeks
Confirming Genuine Botox & Skin Boosters and Correct Dose (Essential)
Results and duration with Botox and skin boosters depend on the product and dose. At KBEAU partner clinics, you can request the checks below.
- Before the procedure, confirm the product name (toxin or skin booster brand) and the dose for each area (units or cc).
- Ask whether a new product is opened in front of you, and ask to see the box and label (product name, volume, expiry date).
- After the procedure, ask to see the empty vial or label that was used, and keep a photo of it.
- Check that the product name and dose are written in your treatment record or itemized details.
After-Care — During Your Trip and After You Return
- After Botox: do not lie down for about 4 hours, and do not rub or massage the injection sites on the same day
- After Botox and skin boosters: avoid saunas, alcohol and intense exercise for 2–3 days
- After skin boosters: avoid harsh cleansing and exfoliation until the bumps have settled
- After laser: apply sunscreen carefully, and stop retinol and exfoliating products until your doctor advises otherwise
- After ablative laser: do not pick at the scabs; keep using a regenerating cream and moisturizer
- The cabin air is dry on flights, so reapply moisturizer and drink water often
- For 1–2 weeks after returning home, postpone strong facial massage and peels
