Who it suits / who it does not
CoolSculpting reduces fat under the skin by cooling it, with no cutting. It is not a weight-loss treatment. It reshapes stubborn local fat that diet and exercise do not shift well.
Who it suits
- People with a pinchable layer of fat (lower belly, flanks, thighs, under the chin, upper arms)
- People whose weight is fairly stable but who are bothered by one specific area
- People who do not want surgery, anesthesia or a long recovery
- People who want to carry on with normal activities on the day of treatment and the next day during a trip
When another option may suit you better
- If your goal is weight loss: the amount of fat removed is small
- If the issue is loose skin rather than pinchable fat: the skin may still sag after the fat is reduced
- If your belly fat is mostly visceral fat under the muscle: cooling only reaches fat just beneath the skin
- If you want a clear change in one go: liposuction is more direct
How CoolSculpting works: cryolipolysis, freezing fat cells
Fat cells are more sensitive to cold than skin cells. Using this difference, the fat under the skin is cooled to a set temperature while the skin surface is protected. The fat cells are gradually damaged and die (cryolipolysis, or fat freezing). Over the following weeks to months, the body's immune system clears the dead cells naturally.
CoolSculpting is the brand name of a device that commercialized this principle. It is known as the fat-freezing device with the most safety data, including US FDA clearance. Fat does not shrink right after treatment; the body needs time to clear the cells, so results appear gradually.
- No anesthesia or incision is needed.
- Once a fat cell has been destroyed it does not come back, but the remaining fat cells can enlarge if you gain weight.
- The amount reduced in one session is a portion of the fat layer in that area (clinical reports generally say around 20–25%).
Areas and applicators: which shape is used where
An applicator (a suction-and-cooling cup or flat pad) is placed on the treatment area. Applicators come in different sizes to suit the thickness and shape of the area, and several may be placed side by side on one area.
| Area | Common concern | What to check at the consultation |
|---|---|---|
| Abdomen | Lower and upper belly fat | Whether it is pinchable fat under the skin or fat deeper by the muscle. Loose skin after childbirth is a separate issue |
| Flanks and waist | Fat below the bra line, love handles | Plan the same number on left and right to keep both sides balanced |
| Thighs (inner and outer) | Saddlebags, inner thigh fat | The area is large, so more applicators may be needed |
| Under the chin | Double chin | Results are limited if the skin is quite loose. A small dedicated applicator is used |
| Upper arms | Fat on the back of the arm | There must be pinchable fat |
| Above the knee, lower back, etc. | Back fat at the bra line, etc. | Whether it is possible depends on which applicators the clinic has |
The types and number of applicators differ from clinic to clinic, and so does which areas can be treated. Before treatment, ask the clinic to write down which applicators, and how many, will be used on your area. Cost is also affected by the area, the number of applicators and the number of sessions.
What happens on the day
- 1Consultation and markingyou stand while the pinchable fat is checked, photos are taken and the area is marked.
- 2Gel pada protective gel pad is placed on the skin, then the applicator on top. You feel a suction-like pull at this point.
- 3Coolingdepending on the applicator, each area takes about 35–60 minutes. The first 5–10 minutes feel cold and stinging, then the area goes numb and becomes comfortable.
- 4Massagewhen the applicator is removed, the frozen area feels firm, and it is massaged by hand for about 1–3 minutes to loosen it. This massage tends to feel stinging and pulling.
- 5Finishthe redness is checked and you can go straight back to your accommodation.
With several areas, the time increases with the number of applicators. Treating the abdomen and flanks together usually means setting aside 2–3 hours including the consultation. You lie still for a long time, so many patients bring a book or a video.
Recovery timeline: swelling, bruising and numbness
- Same dayThe area is red and tingling. You can walk and go sightseeing.
- Days 1–3Swelling, tightness and light bruising may appear. Most people can do their normal activities the next day.
- Weeks 1–2Bruising mostly settles. You may get occasional tingling, prickling or aching.
- Weeks 2–6Numbness or a dulled feeling may remain. It usually returns to normal within a few weeks, but can take longer.
- Months 1–3As the fat layer thins, changes start to show.
- Months 3–6The body keeps clearing fat cells, so changes continue. The final shape is judged after this period.
Rare risks and contraindications: what you need to know
Most side effects are temporary redness, bruising, swelling and numbness. The following are rare, but you should know about them before treatment.
- Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH): a rare side effect in which the treated area becomes firm and bulges out instead of shrinking. It usually appears about 2–5 months after treatment. It often does not go away on its own and may need further treatment such as liposuction. The reported rate varies between reports and is known to be very low. But overseas visitors notice it after going home, so if you suspect it, take photos and tell the clinic.
- Frostbite and skin injury: the risk can rise if the applicator and gel pad do not fit properly or if non-genuine parts are used. If the pain during treatment is hard to bear, say so right away.
- Nerve-related symptoms: numbness and dulled sensation usually improve within a few weeks, but in rare cases they last longer.
- Pain in the treated area: an aching pain (delayed-onset pain) can appear from a few days up to about 2 weeks after treatment.
When the treatment is not done (contraindications)
- Cold-related blood disorders such as cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease and paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria
- Strong reactions to cold, such as Raynaud's disease or cold urticaria
- A hernia, wound, skin condition or reduced sensation in the treatment area
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
Compared with liposuction, INMODE and fat-dissolving injections
| CoolSculpting | Liposuction | INMODE FX | Fat-dissolving injections | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Method | Cooling from outside the skin | Fat removed directly with a cannula | Radiofrequency heat plus electrical stimulation | A drug injected into the fat layer |
| Anesthesia | Not needed | Sedation, or spinal or local anesthesia | Usually numbing cream | Usually not needed |
| Amount reduced in one session | A portion (small) | Largest | Small (mainly face and chin) | Small |
| Recovery | Daily life OK; swelling and tingling for weeks | Redness 2–3 weeks; compression garment 4–8 weeks | Almost none | Swelling for a few days |
| When change shows | 1–3 months, then continuing for months | 1–3 months; final result 3–6 months | 1–2 months | A few weeks to 2 months |
| Sessions | Usually 1–2 per area | Usually 1 | Usually 3–5 | Usually several |
| Suits | Pinchable local fat, no surgery wanted | Larger amounts, a definite change | Small areas such as under the chin | Small amounts of fat in small areas |
The figures for liposuction and INMODE follow the same basis as their own guides. Fat-dissolving injections vary a lot by clinic and drug, so check the ingredients and number of sessions at the consultation. One method is not simply better; the right one depends on how much fat you have and your schedule.
How many sessions, and how far apart
- 1–2 sessions per area is typical. The clinic decides based on fat thickness and your goal.
- A further session is considered after 6–8 weeks or more, once some change has appeared, usually after 2–3 months.
- For patients from overseas, plans sometimes cover several areas at once, or several applicators on one area.
On a short stay, a realistic approach is to have the first session in Korea, discuss progress by photos, then decide whether to come back for a second.
How to fit it into a trip
- Treatment day: within 2–3 hours. A light meal and a walk afterward are fine.
- Next day: most people can go about their day and sightsee. You may feel tingling or tightness, so avoid hard exercise.
- Flying: often possible from the day after treatment. On a long flight, avoid tight clothing because of swelling.
- Sauna, jjimjilbang and hot baths: it is safer to avoid them for a few days until swelling and pain settle.
- Alcohol: best avoided on the first day.
A 3-day, 2-night trip covers treatment and a check the next day. Still, plan with in mind that numbness and swelling last for weeks and that results show after you are home.
How to check the device is genuine
CoolSculpting is the name of one manufacturer's device. Other devices also cool fat, and some clinics use similar-sounding names, so check which device is being used. The applicators and gel pads must also be the ones made for that device to be safe.
- 1Before treatmentcheck that the guidance sheet states the device name (CoolSculpting), the applicator types and number, and the areas.
- 2Device checkask to see the manufacturer's label and certification on the device in the treatment room.
- 3Consumablescheck in front of you that the gel pad and applicator are genuine, and that a new single-use gel pad is opened.
- 4If it is a different freezing deviceask for the exact device name and make sure it is not described as the same thing as CoolSculpting.
Aftercare after you go home
- If swelling lasts, avoid tight clothing and keep to light activity such as walking.
- Gentle massage of the treated area only if the clinic advises it.
- Numbness or a dulled feeling usually returns within a few weeks. If it does not change or gets worse, contact us.
- A large weight gain can enlarge the remaining fat cells and blur the result.
- If the treated area becomes firm and bulges between 2 and 5 months, take a photo and tell the clinic.
- To compare changes, take photos before treatment, at 1 month and at 3 months, in the same pose and lighting.

- Does it examine the pinchable fat in person to judge suitability (and tell you honestly if your goal is weight loss)?
- Does it ask about contraindicating history?
- Does it offer foreign-language support and follow-up after you go home?
